This striking floorcloth is based on a pattern by the iconic British designer, Christopher Dresser, from his book Studies in Design, c.1875. The poppy design is taken from Plate XXXVII from the book and described as a "sheet of powderings adapted for wall ornaments." Powderings are, in this context, a "decoration by means of numerous small figures, usually, the same figure often repeated." The colors in this floorcloth are a modern interpretation of the design and will compliment any placement within the home. Each floorcloth is created with the finest cotton canvas, backed with non-slip padding that is covered by a layer of water-proof vinyl, finished with multiple layers of polyurethane, and then topped with a wax coating. They are durable, beautiful, and non-allergenic.
A floorcloth is a hand-painted canvas rug that has been treated to last a long time. The popularity of floorcloths dates back to the time when Europeans first settled in America. Floorcloths were in vogue throughout the 18th and 19th centuries but were gradually replaced by synthetic floor coverings. However, floorcloths have made a great comeback due to the increasing popularity of hardwood floors and the interest in handcrafted art for home decoration.
